A Week in York part tres

 Ah yes, so what did I do next?   I don't really know... because the next day's pictures were vague and apparently we didn't get in to the things we were gonna see... here is Becky protesting at the gates of the Jorvik Viking Center

 

You see everything in York closes early...

But I did get a shot of this beauty ========>

This is Clifford's Tower by day. It is the main tower of the now defunct York Castle.

This is the problem with relying on pictures for your memories.

Well the next day we were determined -so we marched right back up to Jorvik and Clifford's and made it... but I only have pictures of the tower... so you will have to make do.

Pretty good views though right?

A Week in York part 2

So for the rest of my week I basically decided I would try to check out some of the tourist options. Like the National Railway Museum

Full of trains, just full up with em. 

It was actually a fairly impressive collection and one had to wonder how they got all those trains in to the museum (probably had to do with all the train tracks on the floor). 

After that I spent some time walking the walls until I got to the Yorkshire Museum

which I really enjoyed. It had collections of artifacts found in the area and told the history from the Roman times to present (kind of). Mostly it told the story of the Roman times and a little about the Anglo-Saxon stuff... I found later that most of the other time periods were covered in different exhibits around York.

The Gardens were beautiful though, with the remains of St. Mary's Abbey 

 Later I reconnected with Becky and we walked some more of the York City Walls.

A Week in York

The train ride north was a good reminder that most of England is grasslands and small towns just like here. They don't have the same systems of farming that we have here of course, I didn't see corn or wheat or soy growing, but its easy to imagine that at any time over some random hill are a group of sheep, cows and horses.   Then you realize they are on this side of the hill too.

York is a walled very historic city. From the train station on again I was impressed. We raced around the walled part of town to Becky's place. 

I have no idea what we did then, but later that night we walked into the city centre and had dinner and a pub quiz with her friends.  Our team lost, but only because we hadn't been at the conference all week (right...).

I made mental notes of places around town I wanted to visit again. The kebab shop, the fish and chips place, the candy store... apparently they all had to do with food. 

The next day I  toured the University while Becky worked.

Its really a rather gorgeous campus, with buildings and trees flanking a man made lake. 

The campus also includes some giant hedges and an area called The Quiet Place.

Just outside of the University is the Heslington Village

and passing though Walmgate Stray on our way in and out of the campus.
